TOO BIG, TOO FAST, TOO FUTURISTIC

830 horsepower, 4.5 tonnes and a Neptune Blue matte skin. The gas-guzzler that came back from the dead as an electric giant, inspected inside and out in Dhaka.

The automotive industry has produced its fair share of outrageous vehicles over the years, but few are as extreme as the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV 3X Omega Edition. It is large, heavy, incredibly powerful and packed with technology that makes most modern SUVs look ordinary.

Recently, we had the opportunity to experience one of these rare electric giants, courtesy of New Auto Galaxy, a prestigious dealership of brand new and reconditioned vehicles. While we did not get the chance to drive the vehicle ourselves, we spent time exploring the SUV inside and out and experienced its acceleration from the passenger seat.

Finished in Neptune Blue matte, a colour exclusive to the Omega Edition, the Hummer immediately stands out. In fact, standing next to it for the first time makes most full-size SUVs look surprisingly small.

FROM GAS GUZZLER TO GRID

The Hummer name was built on military-derived, famously thirsty machines, a byword for excess in the combustion age. The brand was retired in 2010, then resurrected a decade later under GMC as a pure electric supertruck. The Omega Edition is the sharpest expression yet of that reversal: the same unapologetic scale, now running on electrons.

STRIKING EXTERIOR

The Hummer EV SUV looks exactly how a vehicle named Hummer should look. It is tall, wide and unapologetically aggressive.

The Omega Edition receives the exclusive Neptune Blue matte paint finish, which complements the futuristic design particularly well. Combined with the large wheels, upright proportions and distinctive LED lighting signatures, the SUV attracts attention everywhere it goes.

Unlike many modern electric vehicles that attempt to appear sleek and minimalist, the Hummer embraces its rugged identity. The squared-off bodywork, muscular wheel arches and commanding road presence make it look more like an off-road expedition vehicle than a conventional SUV.

Its size is perhaps its most striking feature. The Hummer EV weighs approximately 4.5 tonnes, making it one of the heaviest passenger vehicles currently on sale. Seeing it in photographs is one thing, but standing next to it in person is an entirely different experience.

SYSTEM READOUT

The Hummer EV SUV 3X Omega Edition is powered by a tri-motor electric powertrain producing 830 horsepower and 15,591Nm of wheel torque, equivalent to 1,200lb-ft of motor torque. It can accelerate from 0-60mph in approximately 3.5 seconds and offers an estimated driving range of 315 miles on a full charge.

Another standout feature is CrabWalk. By turning all four wheels in the same direction, the Hummer can move diagonally at low speeds, helping navigate difficult off-road situations and tight spaces.

FEATURE-PACKED INTERIOR

Step inside and the first thing you notice is the amount of space available. The cabin feels enormous. Thanks to the flat-floor EV architecture, there is excellent legroom throughout the vehicle. Headroom is equally impressive, while the wide seats contribute to an overall lounge-like atmosphere.

This particular example featured a two-tone white and black interior. Rather than focusing on traditional luxury elements such as glossy wood trim, GMC has opted for a more technical and rugged design language. Soft-touch materials cover most surfaces, complemented by rubberised trims and metallic accents throughout the cabin.

Although there are a few plastic pieces scattered around the interior, most touch points feel premium and well-built.

Rear seat passengers are particularly well catered for. Dedicated climate control knobs, heated rear seats, USB-C charging ports, conventional USB ports and charging outlets are all available. Combined with the generous legroom and wide seats, the second row feels more like a luxury lounge than a typical SUV.

One of the most interesting features is the Infinity Roof with removable Sky Panels. The glass roof sections can be removed and stored inside the front trunk, allowing occupants to enjoy a more open-air driving experience whenever desired.

The dashboard is equally impressive. A large 13.4-inch infotainment display sits at the centre, accompanied by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Thankfully, GMC has retained physical controls for important functions. Climate settings and audio controls can still be adjusted through real buttons and knobs, making the system easier to use while on the move.

The infotainment system itself is packed with features. It includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, power-flow graphics, off-road telemetry, terrain information and multiple camera views. The vehicle's extensive camera system proves especially useful considering the sheer size of the SUV.

The sound system delivers clean and powerful audio performance. Most buyers will be more than satisfied with its capabilities, although audiophiles may find it lacking compared to some of the premium systems available in luxury SUVs.

PASSENGER SEAT EXPERIENCE

Numbers alone, however, fail to capture the experience. Although we did not drive the vehicle ourselves, experiencing its acceleration from the passenger seat was enough to understand what makes the Hummer EV special.

"The acceleration is simply outrageous. Under hard acceleration, the front end visibly lifts."

The instant torque delivery characteristic of electric vehicles is amplified significantly by the Hummer's power output. Under hard acceleration, the front end visibly lifts, creating a dramatic spectacle for both occupants and bystanders.

What is most surprising is how quickly the vehicle gains speed despite weighing nearly 4.5 tonnes. The acceleration feels relentless and continues far longer than most passengers expect.

That being said, the weight never completely disappears. The Hummer is unquestionably fast, but it does not feel like a sports car. Its size and mass remain noticeable, particularly during changes in direction. Under normal driving conditions, however, the vehicle feels smooth, stable and confidence-inspiring.

The suspension settings can be adjusted through a dedicated control on the centre console, allowing drivers to tailor the ride according to different road and terrain conditions.

Braking performance is respectable considering the vehicle's enormous weight, although physics remains physics. You are always aware that you are travelling in one of the heaviest SUVs on the road.

FINAL VERDICT

The GMC Hummer EV SUV 3X Omega Edition is one of the most unique vehicles currently available anywhere in the world. It combines supercar-like acceleration, advanced EV technology and serious off-road capability into a package unlike anything else on the market. The amount of engineering and technology packed into this vehicle is genuinely impressive.

However, it is not a vehicle for everyone. Its enormous dimensions would make everyday driving in Dhaka challenging, while parking and manoeuvring through narrow streets would require patience and careful planning.

For most people, the Hummer EV would make little sense as an only vehicle. Yet practicality has never been the point.

It is a statement piece, a technological showcase and an attention magnet rolled into one.

CLOSING STATEMENT
THE HUMMER EV EXISTS
BECAUSE IT CAN.

You may find faster vehicles. You may find more practical SUVs. But finding something that combines this level of presence, capability and sheer absurdity is almost impossible. And that is exactly what makes the Hummer EV so memorable.
